Last week, the CDC wrote a large check to 29 state and local public health departments to finance 55 projects that will explore innovative approaches to influenza pandemic preparedness.

The $24 million that the CDC allocated will go towards creating effective approaches to an influenza pandemic that could be replicated at the national level, according to a press release. The focus of these projects includes:

  • The use of public engagement as part of the health decision making process
  • Electronic laboratory data exchange to support monitoring
  • Integrating state-based immunization information systems to track countermeasures
  • Development of statewide electronic death reporting systems compliant with Public Health Information Network requirements
  • Collaborative planning among healthcare providers to ensure delivery of essential services
  • Interventions that promote preparedness, particularly among identified vulnerable populations
  • Distribution of antiviral drugs to self-isolated individuals

The funding is part of $600 million in Public Health Emergency System supplemental funding appropriated by Congress in 2006 to develop state and local influenza pandemic plans. For the full press release, click here.
