With the worst of the West Nile virus season likely over, officials from the CDC say this year’s cases are the mildest in seven years.

So far, less than a third of the serious cases which appeared last year have been reported, CDC officials said. As of September 23, there were 368 severe cases of West Nile virus reported, with 18 deaths, according to the Associated Press.

The hardest hit states this year were Mississippi and California, which together accounted for almost half the reported cases. Most West Nile infections are reported in August and September. CDC officials said it is not clear why this season has been so mild.
