Tip of the week: Watch for suicide risks
Healthcare Security Weekly, November 12, 2007
When Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) surveyors visited Georgia Regional Hospital at Savannah, a 160-bed state mental health hospital, in September, they paid close attention to suicide risks.
The hospital received a requirement for improvement (RFI) under EC 2.10 (managing security risks). Surveyors found one fire extinguisher cabinet unlocked and determined that someone could use the equipment as a weapon-a situation that falls under security risk assessments. Surveyors also cited EC.2.10 for grab bars inside bathrooms, which the surveyors indicated should be more secure to thwart tampering by patients with suicidal thoughts.
