Tip of the week: Involve a team in analyzing risks

Infection Control Monitor, November 9, 2007

Key to conducting an effective IC risk assessment at your facility is completing an analysis once you have identified your focus areas. For best results, ICPs should not go through this exercise alone, says James C. Kendig, MS, CSE, CHSP, CHCM, HEM, LHRM, corporate vice president of safety, security, parking, and clinical transportation services at Health First in Melbourne, FL. You should involve a multidisciplinary team in the process.

If your team doesn't represent a broad base of individuals within the organization, you might not get the full picture and you won't get the most from your analysis. "Don't forget to involve the staff that work in the area [you are examining as part of] your risk assessment," says Kendig. "They can provide very valuable information and insight into the process and share concerns."
