GA general surgeons may be exempt from CON

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, November 6, 2007

Georgia's Department of Community Health (DCH) gave first round approval to exempt general surgeons from the certificate of need (CON) law in the state, according to The Albany Herald.

The Herald reports that the DCH also approved a preliminary provision which declares general surgery a single-specialty practice in Georgia. Beginning in 1991, under the state's CON law, single-specialty physicians were allowed to operate and own ASCs without the state's approval.

The DCH will hold a public hearing on the ruling November 28. If the rule passes, general surgeons will join other single-specialty surgeons such as orthopedic surgeons who are allowed to own and run ASCs without state approval.
