Family to sue for $25 million in boy's death

Infection Control Monitor, November 2, 2007

The family of a 12-year-old Brooklyn boy who died October 14 from a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection plans to file a $25 million lawsuit against the city of New York, the family's attorney told CNN.

The family of Omar Rivera alleges he was misdiagnosed at Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn when he was brought in for treatment, CNN reported. The hospital is part of New York City's public hospital system.

The boy was treated first at a clinic and given amoxicillin and ibuprofen, but his mother brought him to the Kings County Hospital Center after a fever persisted, the New York Times reported. The family's lawyer said that at the hospital the boy was given allergy medication and sent home, according to The New York Times.
