Tip of the week: Develop tip sheets for staff members
Infection Control Monitor, November 2, 2007
An effective infection control surveillance plan identifies problem areas in a facility. Using tip sheets is a quick and easy way to give people a way to communicate with the infection control professional (ICP) about potential problems, says Libby Chinnes, RN, BSC, CIC, a consultant with IC Solutions, LLC, in Mount Pleasant, SC.
If a staff member spots a potential issue, he or she can notify you, and the information he or she provides can help you target items for surveillance, she says. In many nursing homes, nursing aides and other staff members check off items on a clipboard, such as "cultures ordered" or "readmission to hospital," that serve as clues for the ICP to determine which charts he or she wishes to review.
For more advice on how to create an effective surveillance plan, go to www.hcpro.com/content/77226.cfm. The cost is $10. Briefings on Infection Control subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
