Subdural hematoma

Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, November 2, 2007

Falls are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in elderly adults, accounting for more than two-thirds of all accidents in this age group. Elderly residents have a high incidence of subdural hematoma. This is related to atrophy of the brain as part of the normal aging process (although intelligence is not affected, the brain shrinks in size with age). Signs and symptoms of head injury may not be readily apparent because the extra space in the cranial vault allows for blood to collect. Symptoms do not become evident until the collection of blood applies pressure on the brain.
