PPV: Perform careful preparation when implementing an EHR in an ambulatory setting

One important part of planning is performing a readiness assessment, which determines how prepared your organization is for EHR implementation. You can then address any weaknesses that the assessment reveals.
Organizations often associate readiness assessment with provider readiness. Provider readiness includes ensuring that the implementation aligns with physician goals and objectives, gauging physician attitudes and perceptions concerning EHR implementation, and examining physicians' current processes and computer literacy. But it's equally important to consider other components of readiness that will affect the organization's likelihood of EHR implementation success, says Laura Jantos, FHIMSS, principal of healthcare IT with ECG Management Consultants in Seattle.
