Study proves laparoscopic cholecystectomies safe in ASCs
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, October 30, 2007
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center presented a study at the American College of Surgeons' (ACS) 93rd annual Clinical Congress October 7-11 on the safety and cost-effectiveness of laparoscopic cholecystectomies in ASCs versus hospitals.
Dartmouth-Hitchcock researchers found that patients who had the procedure done in an ASC (out of nearly 40,000 patients) had the same outcome in terms of safety as hospital patients.
Researchers also found that the average cost for laparoscopic cholecystectomies performed in ASCs was $6,028 versus the cost of $10,786 in hospitals, according to the study.
