Four killed at South Africa hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, October 29, 2007
In South Africa, there were calls to step up security at Seshego Hospital near Polokwane after an October 19 attack that left four senior staff dead after a driver, who the hospital had dismissed from his job, gunned them down. The fired employee went on a shooting spree shortly after being handed his dismissal notice for misusing a government vehicle, police told News 24
The shooting victims included the hospital's chief executive officer, the human resource manager, the administration officer, and transport officer. The fired employee left the hospital but later returned, telling security guards that he had been called to fetch something, reported News 24.While he was being escorted into the administration area, he overpowered one of the security guards and seized his weapon.
The hospital had fired the man for misconduct after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident while driving a car he had stolen from the hospital. He reportedly hit and killed a pedestrian.
