Tip of the week: Have a process to identify and handle VIPs

Healthcare Security Weekly, October 29, 2007

Eventually your facility will receive a visit from a VIP. Of course, a patient does not need to be President of the United States or some other national figure to be a VIP-he or she could be a prominent local official, someone hiding from an abusive spouse, or a person who just wants to protect his or her privacy.

The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) wants to see how you handle inquiries about such people. Most facilities offer all patients upon admission, the option of being listed as a VIP or as a "no information" patient. Such patients must understand that if someone calls looking for them, the hospital will deny their presence.
