Tip of the week: Make the most of surveillance time
Infection Control Monitor, October 26, 2007
To maximize your surveillance time on your hospital's units, refrain from visiting the units during physicians' rounds. Although some infection control professionals may disagree with this strategy, your surveillance will be more efficient if you visit units during off times when they are quieter, Libby Chinnes, RN, BSC, CIC, a consultant with IC Solutions, LLC, in Mount Pleasant, SC, said in the November issue of HCPro's monthly newsletter, Briefings on Infection Control.
If you try to conduct surveillance during rounds, you may start to review a chart only to have it taken away from you. So although it may seem practical to go when the doctors are on rounds so you can speak with them, you'll likely spend more time trying to track down necessary paperwork.
For more tips on how to create an effective surveillance plan, go to www.hcpro.com/content/77226.cfm. The cost is $10. Briefings on Infection Control subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
