Survey finds tracking infections is a top challenge

Quality Improvement Monitor, October 26, 2007

Healthcare professionals say tracking infections across the entire hospital and the control of resistant organisms are their top challenges in managing healthcare-associated infections, according to a survey by Premier Inc.

The survey of more than 800 hospital clinicians also found that measuring compliance with hand hygiene and state-mandated public reporting were major challenges, a Premier press release said. Respondents included quality, risk management, and infection control professionals.

Forty-nine percent of those surveyed cited catheter-associated urinary tract infections as the most challenging of the eight preventable conditions CMS will no longer pay for beginning October 1, 2008. Thirty percent cited the prevention of pressure ulcers as the biggest challenge.
