Schwarzenegger vetoes hospital reporting proposal
Quality Improvement Monitor, October 19, 2007
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on October 12 vetoed a bill passed by the state Legislature that would have required hospitals to report infection and death rates, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Schwarzenegger had been pushing for public reporting, but under pressure from the California Hospital Association, he proposed his own bill that adopted many sections of the legislative plan while not requiring the state to make health info public. His proposal leaves those decisions to the governor's discretion, the Times reports.
Other states, including New Jersey, Kentucky, Missouri, and Maryland, require public reporting. Last month, New York City began reporting annual infection and death rates at its 11 public hospitals.
