Two die as car crashes into hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, October 22, 2007
A physician and a secretary died after an October 15 accident in which a car crashed into the entrance to a Massachusetts' hospital's radiation therapy center.
A 76-year-old breast cancer patient, who was reportedly at Brockton Hospital to deliver an X-ray to her oncologist, was the driver of the car, reported The Boston Globe. Her physician, Mark A. Vasa, MD, 58, the hospital's chief of radiation oncology, was killed, along with Susan Plante, 59, who worked as a secretary in the radiation therapy department for 20 years.
The accident happened at about 1:30 p.m. when an Oldsmobile crashed through the glass doors, struck four people, and smashed into a reception desk, the Globe reported. The driver, whose license was revoked because of the crash, was treated for minor injuries and released. Authorities are investigating the accident to determine if there was a mechanical problem with the car or whether the accident was the result of driver error.
