'Thirsty' man arrested at Hong Kong hospital

Healthcare Security Weekly, October 22, 2007

File this one under the weird and wacky. A drunk and "extremely thirsty" man, who drank two vials of blood during a visit to a Hong Kong hospital, was jailed for two months for theft, according to news reports.

The unemployed, 29-year-old man admitted stealing the blood from a laboratory counter after he was caught on surveillance cameras, the South China Morning Post reported. The man drank three bottles of rice wine and two cans of beer before going to Yan Chai hospital for treatment of an injured toe. He picked up three vials of liquid on his way to the hospital dispensary.

The man, who said he was extremely thirsty, realized the vials contained blood after he drank the contents of the first two and dumped the third. The magistrate who jailed the defendant criticized the hospital for lax security after he was told a porter left the blood samples on an unattended laboratory counter, the newspaper reported. A hospital spokesman said the facility set up a task force to review security and also improved the design of sample collection boxes.
