Autonomic dysreflexia

Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, October 19, 2007

Autonomic dysreflexia is a potentially life-threatening complication from a spinal cord injury. It usually occurs in residents with injuries above the midthoracic area or the sixth thoracic vertebra. As a rule, injuries that would normally cause pain below the level of the spinal damage set this chain of events in motion. Any irritation can trigger this condition, but the most common cause is full bladder.
