AHRQ report finds hospital deaths dropping

Quality Improvement Monitor, October 12, 2007

Hospital deaths from heart attacks and other serious conditions dropped sharply from 1994 to 2004, according to a report released this week by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Detroit News reported.

There were 43 fewer deaths for every 1,000 patients, the paper said. Deaths from congestive heart failure, pneumonia and stroke decreased by about 30 per 1,000 patients.

The AHRQ also reported that about 136,000 patients who would have died from six conditions in 1994 survived their hospital stays in 2004, according to the News.

"You're seeing more attention paid to the improvement of quality of care," Mamatha Pancholi, an AHRQ analyst, told the paper. Hospitals are also "taking advantage of improved treatment options and better technology."
