Tip of the week: Be sure to have a forensic patient policy

Healthcare Security Weekly, October 8, 2007

Although having a policy on how your hospital will handle forensic patients is a human resources department requirement under Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) standards, the accreditor can still cite your facility under the Environment of Care portion of the survey for failing to comply.

Therefore, create a plan for handling forensic patients. Inform the staff of the policy and review it to ensure that they understand the definition of a forensic patient, and what to do if a prisoner is admitted to the facility.

You can find a sample policy in The Environment of Care: A Compliance Guide to the JCAHO's Management Plans. Go to www.hcmarketplace.com/prod-4533.html to learn more.
