Physicians may face more transparency concerns

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, October 9, 2007

U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan ordered the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) August 22 to disclose data on physician claims that Medicare paid in 2004, according to the memorandum opinion published by the district court of the District of Columbia.

A nonprofit consumer group will use the data to create a database to track physicians and their experience with various procedures. Judge Sullivan delayed the release of information until October 22, and HHS is contemplating appealing the ruling.

"A consumer selecting a physician for a knee replacement or prostate surgery or other major procedure will be able to check that a physician has an appropriate level of experience," says Robert Krughoff, the group's president.
