Spread immunization efforts

Infection Control Monitor, September 28, 2007

Just a reminder: This week is National Adult Immunization Awareness Week. The annual health observance is an opportunity to promote the important of adult immunizations, says the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The agency reminded healthcare professionals that Medicare provides coverage for flu, pneumonia, and hepatitis B vaccinations and their administration. All adults 65 and older should get flu and pneumonia shots. People with Medicare who are under 65 but have chronic illness, including heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, or end-stage renal disease should also get a flu shot.

For more information about Medicare's coverage of adult immunizations and a list of educational resources, go to www.cms.hhs.gov/MLNProducts/35_PreventiveServices.asp.
