Inquest underway into nurse's death in Canadian hospital

Healthcare Security Weekly, October 1, 2007

A coroner's inquest is taking place in Windsor, Ontario into the death of a nurse who was stabbed and killed at the hospital where she worked by her ex-boyfriend, who was an anesthesiologist there.

A nurse testified last week that hospital management did not do enough to protect Lori Dupont who was stabbed seven times by Marc Daniel in the recovery room of Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital on Nov. 12, 2005, reported The Canadian Press. Daniel later killed himself.

The hospital has faced criticism over reinstating Daniel's work privileges, which it suspended after he attempted suicide earlier in the year and was ordered to seek counseling. The case has raised questions about domestic violence and harassment in the workplace and could bring about occupational health and safety recommendations that might affect hospitals and other workplaces across Canada, reported CBC News.
