Accused assailant recaptured after trip to hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, October 1, 2007
Boston police on September 26 recaptured an accused rapist who escaped from custody after police allowed him to go to a local hospital without any supervision.
The 29-year-old man had been on the run since escaping from an unguarded room at New England Medical Center on September 23. He had been in police lock up until he complained to his jailers that he was feeling ill, reported the Boston Herald. A police duty supervisor made the decision to send him to the hospital by ambulance without police protection. Boston police, who were not aware the man had vanished until he failed to show up at his arraignment, are conducting an internal investigation into what happened.
The man is charged with one count each of assault with intent to rape, indecent assault and battery, and assault and battery. He was arrested after a woman reported that she had been assaulted in Boston's Chinatown.
