Tip: Consider using enterprise terminology services
EHR Connection, October 1, 2007
Many technology users in the healthcare industry are familiar with EHR-related standards, such as HL7, that improve communication among systems by providing guidelines for organizations to follow. Here's a related technology term: enterprise terminology services (ETS).
Just as standards help pave the way for interoperability and smooth communication, ETS eliminates the problems resulting from system users employing different words to say the same thing. Without the standardized terminology that ETS provides, EHR users might type in different descriptions, terms, or codes for the same symptom or event, leading to sub-optimal communication and decision making based on incorrect or misunderstood data. Consider using ETS in your facility.
