Center for Studying Health System Change reports variation in IT adoption

EHR Connection, October 1, 2007

The Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC) released a study September 20 about the variation in IT adoption, according to a new HSC bulletin.

HSC's study based its study on its 2004-2005 Community Tracking Study Physician Survey. The study looked at whether physician had IT access in their facilities for five standard medical activities including:

  • Accessing patient notes
  • Obtaining information about treatment alternatives
  • Writing prescriptions
  • Exchanging clinical data and images with hospitals
  • Swapping clinical data and images with physicians

In terms of variation, the study found that, for example, surgeons had less access to IT than medical specialists did for four out of the five medical activities.
