Tip of the week: Code alerts staff to potential violence
Healthcare Security Weekly, September 24, 2007
Boston Medical Center recently introduced Code Green, which the facility uses in response to actual or threatened violence, says Elaine Ullian, the hospital's president and CEO.
Increasingly, community violence creates a spillover into the healthcare setting, so hospitals face greater challenges in providing a safe and secure environment, she says.
Code Green communicates a message without creating panic in the workplace, says Ullian, who spoke at the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety's annual meeting in Boston in June. It alerts staff members to stand by for further instruction and is taught to new employees during orientation.
To learn more about the various codes that hospitals use, go to www.hcpro.com/ppv-76191.html. The cost is $10. Briefings on Hospital Safety subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
