Tip: Make EHR less intimidating for hospital employees, MDs
EHR Connection, September 24, 2007
EHRs can make your hospital more efficient and reduce errors, but only if you provide appropriate training and opportunities for user feedback.
To avoid overwhelming new employees, focus on the basics; introduce tips and techniques as they become familiar with your system.
Provide one-on-one support and offer regularly scheduled training on new enhancements to your EHR system. Bundle enhancements instead of constantly responding to revisions and updates.
Computer-savvy clinicians just finishing a residency might be able to skip EHR training, but the learning curve for experienced physicians could be steep. Use on-the-spot training to accommodate busy clinician schedules; provide helpers, liaisons, and IT advisors for those who struggle with the technology.
Provide opportunities for employee feedback, such as focus groups and lunch with administrators. Schedule monthly meetings for physicians and use this time to offer advanced user training.
This tip is brought to you by the September issue of Electronic Health Records Briefings.
