PPV: Standardization, automation key to form redesign
EHR Connection, September 24, 2007
Two of the big hurdles that an organization must tackle along the way to EHR conversion are form redesign and scanning preparation, according to two industry experts, Leslie Mack, RHIT, senior director of HIM at CareTech Solutions in Troy, MI, and Bambi Rose, RHIT, certification manager at Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology in Chicago. An organization preparing for EHR implementation should standardize the layout and fields of forms, develop a standard form template, and commit to using bar codes.
For scanning, healthcare facilities typically use bar codes that represent the patient's billing or account number and the type of document. "It's very important for labor savings on a scanning project that you try to automate as much of the indexing process as possible," says Rose.
