Retired police officer kills himself at Philadelphia hospital

Healthcare Security Weekly, September 17, 2007

A 63-year-old retired police officer walked into the emergency room (ER) at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia on the morning of September 10, sat for a few moments, and then went into a nearby restroom where he shot himself to death, reported the Philadelphia Daily News.

A patient in the ER waiting room told the newspaper that she was stunned when she heard a single gunshot blast. The woman said she got up and told security guards, "something just happened in that bathroom."

Police, who recovered a 9 mm handgun and a suicide note, said the retired officer shot himself in the head and he was pronounced dead 15 minutes later, the newspaper reported. Security guards ushered waiting patients into a nearby room and taped up sheets on the windows of the waiting room while police removed the body.
