New York City puts public hospital data online
Infection Control Monitor, September 14, 2007
Eleven public hospitals, owned by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, began publicly reporting data on infection and death rates on September 7, reported The New York Times.
The hospital corporation, the country's largest public health system, began voluntarily posting the information on its Web site at www.nyc.gov/hhc. The data, now available to the public, includes rates for central line infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and surgical infections. The city's decision is driven by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's efforts to make public health a centerpiece of his administration and by the hospital corporation's focus on improving patient safety, the Times said. Health care experts called it a "bold step" in an industry that has long resisted public disclosure, the newspaper reported.
