Tip of the week: Focus flu prep efforts on employee vaccinations
Infection Control Monitor, September 14, 2007
A strong employee influenza vaccination program should be a top priority for the 2007-2008 flu season, infection control experts say.
In fact, such programs are recommended or even required by the CDC, The Joint Commission, OSHA, and the Hospital Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee. Healthcare workers who don't get vaccinated are the key cause of influenza outbreaks in healthcare settings, says Gloria Morrell, RN, BSN, MS, CIC, infection control specialist at Northside Hospital in Atlanta.
But vaccination should not be limited to hospital staff members. It should also include licensed independent contractors, volunteers, contract workers, and others who come into contact with patients at your facility. For more steps to protect your staff members and patients from the flu, go to www.hcpro.com/content/75799.cfm. The cost is $10.
