New York Hospitals Corp. posts infection and death rates
Quality Improvement Monitor, September 14, 2007
The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, the country's biggest public health system, began releasing data last week on infection and death rates at its 11 hospitals, according to The New York Times.
The corporation posted the data on its Web site, www.nyc.gov/hhc, a move that puts the agency far ahead of others in the trend toward transparency, health care experts and consumer advocates told the paper.
The Web site allows the public to see the overall death rate, the rate of deaths after heart attacks, preventable bloodstream infections, and pneumonia cases, among other measures, at the 11 hospitals.
"Others will draw courage from them," Jim Conway, senior vice president at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, told the Times. "They are exposing themselves to considerable scrutiny."
