Make provisional steps a part of any generator repair
Tip Of The Week, September 12, 2007
Should a generator test fail in your hospital, take interim steps immediately until repairs are made.
That's a requirement straight out of Joint Commission standard EC.7.40 (inspecting and testing emergency power).
During a document review, life safety specialists might check for proof of these interim measures by noting whether:
- The hospital completed all required generator tests
- Staff members noted problems during a test
- Corrective actions took place once problems were identified
- Other actions occurred to ensure the reliable delivery of emergency power while corrective actions were underway
Remember, life safety specialists currently visit hospitals with 200 or more beds, and will also tour hospitals with fewer than 200 beds as of January 1, 2008. For more help preparing for these visits, check out our new book, Life Safety Survey Companion: Compliance Strategies for The Joint Commission.
