MCCD report shows programs not achieving cost-neutrality

Only a minority of the 15 Medicare Coordinated Care Demonstration (MCCD) projects currently show signs of eventually becoming cost-neutral-one of the program goals for the demonstration. In addition, it's difficult to draw firm conclusions about what works from the overall program because no single characteristic seems to be associated with a greater likelihood of program success. That's the conclusion from a consultant's report recently submitted to Congress about the MCCD, which was designed to test whether case management and disease management (DM) programs can lower costs and improve patient outcomes and well-being in the Medicare fee-for-service population.
