Employees sue hospital over tuberculosis

Healthcare Security Weekly, September 10, 2007

Three security guards are among seven employees at Pinecrest Hospital in Beckley, W.V. who filed a lawsuit against the facility saying they tested positive for tuberculosis after the state-run hospital installed an air conditioning system that compromised a negative air flow system, reported The Register-Herald.

Lewisburg attorney Barry Bruce filed the suit on behalf of the security guards, a custodian, two health service workers, and an administrative assistant-all of whom continue to work at the hospital, the newspaper reported.

The suit contends the hospital installed a through-the-wall air conditioning system in August 2001 compromising the negative pressure in the tuberculosis isolation rooms and letting contaminated air to reach other sections of the facility.
