Employees sue hospital over tuberculosis

Infection Control Monitor, September 7, 2007

Seven employees at Pinecrest Hospital in Beckley, WV filed a lawsuit against the facility saying they tested positive for tuberculosis after the state-run hospital installed an air conditioning system that compromised a negative air flow system, reported The Register-Herald.

Lewisburg attorney Barry Bruce filed the suit on behalf of a custodian, two health service workers, three security guards, and an administrative assistant-all of whom continue to work at the hospital, the newspaper reported.

The suit contends the hospital installed a through-the-wall air conditioning system in August 2001 compromising the negative pressure in the tuberculosis isolation rooms and letting contaminated air reach other sections of the facility.
