Joint Commission: Staff can report safety concerns without threat of retribution

Quality Improvement Monitor, September 7, 2007

Physicians and medical staff members worried about the safety and quality of care at their hospital can report those concerns without fear of retribution, according to a new rule announced this week by The Joint Commission.

The revised requirement, which will become effective January 1, 2008, calls on accredited hospitals to educate staff and clinicians that they can report their concerns about safety or quality to The Joint Commission - without the threat of retaliation.

"The Joint Commission policy forbids accredited organizations from taking retaliatory actions against those who report quality of care concerns because it is the obligation of everyone in an organization to make patient well-being the priority," William E. Jacott, M.D., special advisor for professional relations for The Joint Commission, said in a press release.
