Maryland rules supreme in number of ASCs
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, September 11, 2007
To date, Maryland has the highest number of ASCs in the nation, according to The Foundation for Ambulatory Surgery in America, which the Annapolis, MD Capital Gazette reported in a September 2 article.
Maryland has 352 surgery centers, followed closely by Idaho, Washington, and Wyoming. ASC growth could be attributed to the fact that physicians have the ability to create their own businesses, due to technological advances.
"The biggest motivating factor for me is my ability to schedule when I want," said physician Michael Dodd, a co-owner of Eye Associates, a surgical center on Riva Road in Annapolis where he performs cataract surgeries. "I'm just a cog in a wheel at the hospital. Here, I'm the wheel," according to the article.
