Appreciate a Taser’s injury risk
Tip Of The Week, September 5, 2007
If your hospital allows its security officers or local police officers to carry Tasers into the facility, check out an interesting study about the potential injuries this weapon could cause.
A police officer who volunteered to be the subject of a Taser demonstration suffered spine fractures after getting zapped, according to an online report this week in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
The fractures were "almost certainly caused by muscle spasms in his back triggered by the Taser," said a press release from the Annals.
Though such injuries are statistically rare, "medical personnel and law enforcement officers should recognize that these weapons are still associated with injuries," the press release stated.
