TennCare’s income waiver extended

Managed Care Weekly Advisor, September 5, 2007

For the fourth time since 1993, the federal government has issued a temporary extension on a waiver that allows TennCare to enroll patients with higher incomes than those allowed by Medicaid.

According to Tennessean.com, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the TennCare bureau still have not agreed on some of the financial terms of the waiver renewal. One obstacle is a provision that would cap TennCare's reimbursement rate for patients unable to pay their medical bills. If federal payments are capped, TennCare might see $386 million less than the projected costs for the next three years.

The program could benefit up to 100,000 patients who are currently ineligible for medical coverage.
