Communication, med rec remain top noncompliance issues

Communication, medication reconciliation, and proper storage of medications were the top noncompliance issues in 2006, according to The Joint Commission Online.

The top trouble spots include:

  • National Patient Safety Goal #2: Improve communication among caregivers -- 58% noncompliance
  • Goal #8: Reconcile medications through the continuum of care -- 46%
  • MM.2.20: Properly store medications -- 44%
  • UP 1: Meet the expectations of the Universal Protocol for Preventing Wrong Site, Wrong Procedure, Wrong Person Surgery -- 30%
  • MM.3.20: Make sure medication orders are legible and transcribed accurately -- 26%
