Judge orders HHS to disclose data on docs
Quality Improvement Monitor, August 31, 2007
A federal judge in Washington, D.C., last week ruled in favor of a consumer group that sued the Health and Human Services (HHS) Department to release specific data about physicians from the Medicare claims database, the Los Angeles Times reported.
U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan said disclosing the data would be "a significant public benefit," and ordered the department to turn it over by September 21, the Times said.
"These data will make it possible to develop measures that will be very helpful to consumers," Robert Krughoff, president of Consumers' Checkbook, the nonprofit group that sued for the information, told the paper. HHS has not decided whether to appeal the ruling.
