HHS grants $2 million to AHIC successor

EHR Connection, September 3, 2007

Grants from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) totaling approximately $13 million will be awarded for the design, creation, and operation of a successor to the American Health Information Community (AHIC), according to an August 27 Health Data Management article.

HHS anticipates an initial $2 million payment for the design and creation of a successor entity during a four-month period, and a subsequent $3 million payment to fund the successor entity's initial ongoing operations. HHS will grant an additional $8 million to support operations, but this amount is subject to fund availability.

HHS' Secretary Michael Leavitt supports a new public-private entity that is more representative of industry stakeholders, but others such as the American Association of Retired Persons believe AHIC would remain more accountable under the federal government.

In his role as HHS secretary, Leavitt advises the department with respect to advancing HIT, including the creation of a national health information network.
