Antifraud standards subject of EHR report

EHR Connection, September 3, 2007

In a recent report prepared for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), RTI International, one of the world's leading research institutes, recommends requirements for EHR systems that are designed to prevent and detect fraud and improper payments, according to the August 20 American Hospital Association News.

The report, prepared specifically for HHS' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, recognizes that the vast majority of clinicians do not commit fraud, and should not be burdened by mechanisms aimed at those who do.

RTI's recommended requirements intend to help the majority of clinicians by promoting error reduction and good documentation practices, and by providing guidance with respect to unwarranted accusations of fraud and stronger proof of legitimacy.
