Mind your decon suit inventory
Tip Of The Week, August 24, 2007
We read about a community disaster drill in Wasilla, AK, that brought up two useful pointers.
The drill centered on a possible anthrax attack at a crash site, so crews sent the simulated victims through a decontamination tent.
Two problems noted by organizers including the following, as reported by the Anchorage Daily News:
- Medics who donned Tyvek suits for protection near the exposed victims ended up tearing through more suits than anticipated, which led coordinators to conclude they need to triple the amount of suits they stock and vary available suit sizes
- Volunteers who went through the decon shower needed more blankets because of how cold they were after getting doused
