Woman faces attempted kidnapping charge
Healthcare Security Weekly, September 3, 2007
A 32-year-old Missouri woman, who was arrested in mid-August and charged with attempted kidnapping after she allegedly planned to snatch a baby from a Joplin hospital, reportedly feigned several pregnancies.
The woman's estranged husband told The Joplin Globe that he believes she may have been desperate to convince him and others she was pregnant again. The woman went to Freeman Hospital West after calling an ambulance and claiming to be in labor. However, a pregnancy test was negative and she was discharged.
After being escorted out of the hospital, police officials said she went to St. John's Regional Medical Center and eventually was taken into custody for questioning. At the police station, she reportedly confessed to intending to snatch a baby, the newspaper said. Birth announcements, pre-addressed invitations to a baby shower, and a birthing calendar were allegedly found in her purse, along with hair extensions and sunglasses that might be used as a disguise, police said.
