New Illinois law requires hospitals to screen patients for MRSA
Quality Improvement Monitor, August 24, 2007
Illinois will become the first state to require hospitals to screen patients for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The new law, signed by the governor on Monday, calls on hospitals to test all patients in intensive-care units for MRSA infections and to isolate patients with the bacteria, the paper reported. Clinicians will have to wash their hands and wear masks and gloves when dealing with infected patients.
Pennsylvania and New Jersey both approved similar laws this year, but their laws will be implemented later. Illinois' new law becomes effective immediately, the Tribune said.
