Research shows virus may contribute to obesity

Infection Control Monitor, August 31, 2007

Infection with a common virus may be contributing to the growing problem of obesity in the United States, according to scientists.

Researchers reported August 19 that in laboratory experiments human stem cells exposed to adenovirus-36 turned into fat cells. The virus is part of the family of viruses that causes colds and pinkeye. The findings, which could lead to a vaccine or antiviral medication to help fight viral obesity in the future, were presented at the 234th national meeting of the American Chemical Society.
