Study: Temp nurses provide high quality care
Quality Improvement Monitor, August 17, 2007
Hospitals that use temporary nurses don't compromise quality of care because these nurses are just as qualified, and in many cases more competent than staff nurses, a study has found, according to the Star- Ledger of New Jersey.
The study is in the latest issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration.
"There is no evidence whatsoever that the use of supplemental nurses by hospitals has any adverse implications for quality of care," lead study author Linda Aiken told the paper. "Indeed, the findings of our study suggest that having more nurses is better for patients and having [temporary nurses] improves quality of care."
A recent national tracking study found as many as 75% of hospitals use temporary nurses, the paper said.
